Memories Made Monday: Taking the Kids to Live Performances

weekend plans

Welcome to the first Memories Made Monday weekly series. These posts will mostly recap activities and experiences from the weekend. In the event nothing was planned, I will share other not-so-recent memories.

My birthday was last week and, to celebrate, I was determined to do things I wanted and introduce my kids to something new at the same time. So, I chose to share my love for theater and took the kids to live performances.

On Friday evening, the theater group at their school performed Aladdin Jr. It was so much fun and my kids loved seeing some of their friends on stage. I was very impressed to see how talented the cast members are. I remember some of them as babies. To see them grow in so many ways was very emotional for me.

On Saturday, we were invited to a combo birthday/communion party (sister/brother respectively). We ate dinner, the kids played, and got their faces and hands painted. That night, I also attended a fundraiser to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

On Sunday, I had tickets for the four of us to see Singin’ in the Rain performed by the North Riverside Players theater group. I absolutely LOVED IT!!! This is one of my favorite movies and I have seen it live before, but the kids hadn’t. They were in awe watching it rain on stage. In fact, my oldest son was disappointed we weren’t seated closer so he could get wet.

Since they’ve never been to a live performance that lasted longer than an hour, they started to get antsy right at intermission. They actually thought it was over when they saw the crew cleaning up after the rain. So, I think it goes without saying the second half resulted a lot of shifting in their seats and wanting to know if we could leave.

Overall, we had a great weekend and I was happy to spend it with my three babies.

When was the first time you took your kids to a live performance?

  1. A few years back, I took my oldest two children to see the the local high school’s rendition of Beauty & The Beast on a Friday night. That same weekend, on Sunday, I treated them AND my mother to the same play, but at our local state theater with a professional cast. I haven’t taken them to anything recently, but next month my daughter and I are going to see Les Miserables for her birthday. I love that my kids share my love of musical theater.
